True Cabaret has to do with revealing the essence and energy of the artist’s personality and soul.  When the Cabaret performer is in tune with his or her own soul’s journey, that is when the gift of touching the audience emotionally is most apparent.

The freedom and joy of Cabaret is being able to pick material from genres and styles of endless music catalogues.  Everyone’s act has a personal style and taste.  I love that about Cabaret!  How magical it is to transport an audience somewhere with funny stories, or to deeply move them, or most importantly to make them just feel ALIVE and VIBRANT!

In my many years of teaching the “Art of Cabaret,” I have seen performers literally transform their own lives while exploring the external and internal life of a song.  It is a wonderful process that requires research, discipline of one’s instrument, maximum acting skills, and a willingness to expose the many faces of the human condition.  A Cabaret artist, through song and words, can transform an audience by revealing his or her true self.  A Cabaret artist can have the power to uplift and inspire.  And this can have a profound healing causation.

Cabaret artists have a responsibility to constantly re-create themselves, to always dig deeper and give more to their audiences.

But we artists are the lucky ones.  We get to wake up everyday and rejoice in the gift of song, guided by our spirit and passion for more truth.
